Pieter Steinz studied ancient history and English at the University of Amsterdam, where he later taught classical culture. In 1989 he began work as arts editor for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and became literary editor in 1997. In a weekly column, Steinz propagates the pleasures of reading the classics, from Homer to Houellebecq. His 'bookwebs' have been reproduced in four reading guides: Reading &cetera ('Lezen &cetera'), Reading on Location ('Lezen op locatie'), All Books Wish They Were Music ('Elk boek wil muziek zijn'), and The Worldwide Web of World Literature ('Het web van de wereldliteratuur.
